The One Industry AI Isn't Going to Kill: Software Development

“Is software engineering a dying field?”

“Is coding dead?”

“Are the tech layoffs a sign that demand for tech workers is shrinking?”

“Will AI replace software developers?”

These are just some of the search results that have been trending ever since the release of advanced AI tools like ChatGPT. It's understandable why these questions arise. The rise of AI has indeed been a monumental disruption in the tech world. Many software developers find themselves pondering the longevity of their careers, while newcomers learning to code question the viability of their chosen path.

But the answer to these queries is a resounding no. Coding is not dead; in fact, the software engineering field is more vibrant and dynamic today than ever before. However, it is undergoing a significant transformation.

Software trends that shouldn't be ignored

Chat GPT

ChatGPT and other Large Language Models are being used extensively in the software engineering world, along with other predictive AI models. Using tools like these have actually been a boon to the productivity of software engineers like myself, as the task of writing and planning code has become a much easier task.

Instead of having to google, and figure out how to write up a template for a software engineering task, an dev can instead use a tool like ChatGPT to start the process, and once the basics are written out, the developer can just use their knowledge to fill in the specifics that are left. This significantly speeds up the development process, and allows engineers to be more productive with their time.

Growing employment opportunities

Contrary to the notion of a shrinking job market, software development remains one of the fastest-growing professions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 25% growth rate in employment opportunities from 2022 to 2032. This surge is partly fueled by the expanding role of AI and technology in everyday life and across sectors.

Almost every industry today relies on software for various functions. From healthcare to finance, education to retail, the need for customized software solutions is increasing. Software developers are essential in creating these tailored solutions, ensuring that systems are efficient, user-friendly, and secure.

Low code software development

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, certain software trends stand out for their transformative impact and should not be ignored by those in the field. One pivotal trend is the rise of low-code and no-code platforms, which democratize software development by enabling individuals without extensive coding expertise to create applications. This shift not only accelerates prototyping and deployment but also refocuses skilled developers on more complex and strategic tasks.

This will be one of the main ways in which software engineering will be reshaped in the coming years. I foresee many coders moving towards information architecture roles, as the process of building digital products will become easier and easier. The hard part will be designing, planning, and integrating those products into a company's existing techno-system.

I’ll be writing more on low code solutions in the future and the viability of them, so please subscribe to the mailing list if you’d like to read more.

It’s a field that will always be evolving, and that's what makes it unkillable.

Ultimately, as the field evolves, software engineers must adapt and continually update their skills. Lifelong learning is not just recommended; it's essential. Understanding new programming languages, AI systems, and emerging tech trends will be crucial to staying relevant in this exciting field.

While AI is reshaping the landscape of software development, it's far from signaling the end of this profession. On the contrary, it's creating new dimensions and opportunities. Coding and software development are evolving into more innovative, efficient, and integrated fields, making this an exciting time to be part of the tech world.
